RESUME OBJECTIVE:
An objective is a simple statement expressing your goals.
A young lady once had an objective "I want a nice easy job with nice raises twice a year." I'm serious. That objective on a resume will place the resume in a circular file.
Sample "Objectives's which have been proven effective follow:
OBJECTIVE: A demanding position in _____________ leading to additional responsibilities.
Why "demanding"?
1. The logic: You want to work hard. Promise 110% effort.
Create an image in the employer's mind.
2. Most people use "challenging." Good but used too much.
3. Demanding catches the reader's eye. "DEMANDING" STANDS OUT!
Alternative words not often used include:
Oversight, Responsible, Rigorous, Rewarding. hands-on.
Develop and use phrases, which state that you wish to give the employer one hundred ten percent effort.
Samples for the "fill in the blank" could be:
Entry level marketing. - - - - - - - - - Sales management.
Educational administration - - - - - Managerial accounting.
Production line supervision. - - - - Highway construction.
The second line: "leading to additional responsibilities." informs the employer that you are promotable.
Employers look for individuals, who will be able to assume additional duties and have supervisory skills. You should immediately qualify yourself within your resume.
"Leading to additional responsibilities," makes that qualifying statement.
Design your resume to meet the requirements of your supervisor's job title.
Note: Some resume guides recommend omitting the use of an "Objective". The reasoning is you are limiting your opportunity for career change. You must then be prepared to submit a cover letter with every resume. I prefer to include the "Objective.
Is English a second language? Try the following objective.
OBJECTIVE: Supervisory responsibility for EDP operations in a multi-lingual environment.
More and more employers are in need of individuals with bi-lingual abilities. When the employer indicates that a second language is required, use the phrase "in a multi-lingual environment". Employers may require that you demonstrate your proficiency by submitting two cover letters, one in English, and a duplicate in the language specified. I have seen requirements that this cover be hand written. Perhaps it is also time to practice your handwriting.
Another approach is to provide a Summary of work experience directed toward the occupational goal at hand. For example:
A seasoned, versatile executive who has charted a successful career path with continually increasing responsibilities in the industry. A natural competitor with strong interpersonal skills who enjoys an environment of constant challenge.
The third approach (schoolteachers) is to display an attitude:
"I love being around children of every age and enjoy relating to them. It is a joy to present a child with a fact or something new, and to see the child learn and grasp the concept for the first time.
My goal is to teach a child as much as he or she is capable of learning, and demonstrate to the child that education is something to enjoy and want."
