PREFACE

. My first resume was worse than poor. Fortunately, I was a "walk in" and a very gracious manager who spent thirty minutes teaching me the fundamentals of writing a good resume interviewed me. I listened, and in rewriting my resume, I applied the instructions offered, got in the door and was hired.

. During five years of casually sending resumes, I had been across the country five times for job interviews. My 'mini vacations", at employers' expense, were to Wyoming. Texas, Northern Wisconsin, Iowa, and South Dakota. When I was looking seriously for a job last year, I received additional trips to Iowa, Indiana, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania. Telephone interviews (which are what an employer does when he does not want to pay for my vacation) came from Alabama, New York, North Dakota, Tennessee, and Oklahoma.

. After my fifth trip friends, recommended that I make some money with my ability of writing a good resume. Four years of writing resumes for others has taught me that even though I may not have a degree in Journalism or English, I am able to apply my concepts to almost any resume and improve the odds of an affirmative response.

. I enjoy writing resumes for others and myself. One of the most important parts of preparing a resume for a client is to teach the individual how to prepare an effective resume, so that he doesn't have to pay me or someone else the next time he needs one. When you have completed this book, you will be able to create an excellent, powerful resume.

. One individual called in response to an advertisement, I had placed in a newspaper, asked me, "What is my track record?"

. I honestly don't know, except that it is good.

. I have had referrals from referrals. A schoolteacher called and said; "I landed my job in two weeks. Now, will you do my husband's resume?"

. A police sergeant told me his daughter had been successful in finding a job with the resume I prepared for her. Now he wanted one for himself.

The last time I was unemployed, I promptly called my references to inform them that I was back in the job market and that they would probably be contacted by prospective employers.

. One of my former supervisors, when contacted, laughed and said, "You wrote the book on job hunting; you won't have any problems."

. At that time, I had not written the book, but I had "lived" it. Now, having "written" it, I am sharing it with you.

. My goal is to make your resume work for you and as a result, there will be interesting and enjoyable sidelights to the job hunting process. You can see the country, at little or no cost. You are going to meet interesting employers, and will learn to identify and sell the specific requirements that employer's desire.

. Three years ago I prepared the resume for a plant manager in the Chicago area attempting to relocate to Arizona. Three weeks later he came over and commented that he had not received any calls. In three weeks he mailed only three resumes. In the same three weeks I had mailed 45 resumes, interviewed five times in Illinois, flown to Pittsburgh to interview and was preparing to fly to Des Moines for another interview. I was hired three weeks later in another Iowa town. The employer paid for my relocation. In another instance I mailed sixty resumes in two weeks. I had to cancel seven interviews in the Dakotas, Iowa, Kansas and Wisconsin when I accepted an offer in Minnesota. Use your resume effectively. Don't let it sleep at home.
